"Directed by/starring..." No way, ain't watching it.
« on: April 07, 2016, 02:00:01 AM »
Made a similar topic a few years back about directors or actors we like and would seen anything with/by them right away. This is the opposite. Which directors or actors turn you off to a movie? This is just my opinion, if you like any of these people, I have nothing against that.

Directors

M. Night Shyamalan: He believes himself to be so deep, but his movies just drag on and on. The dialogue is generally laughably bad, the acting is wooden, and plots are well... awful. The only good thing to ever come out of his is Unbreakable.

Michael Bay: Explosions and boobs. This guy could not make a decent movie to save his life. Pearl Harbor, however, was legitimately insulting though with its disrespect to history.

James Cameron: Now this one is a real cash cow in movies. His movies are visually pleasing, but the stories and characters are severely lacking in the originality department. I would never pay to see any of his movies, I'll just watch them for free on the internet and likely never watch them again. How Titanic to this day is seen as a masterpiece just blows my mind.

Actors

Jack Black: I'm sure everybody has that one actor they just don't like and can't explain why. Well, Jack Black's mine. I don't think he's funny. In fact, I find him really annoying in all his movies. I'm sure he's a decent guy, but as an actor, I don't like him.

Mel Gibson: He's a douchebag antisemite, racist woman abuser. So in personality, he's a scumbag. I'd use a stronger term, but we're in the main boards.  As an actor, I find him very mediocre and always playing the same character over and over again (at least in the 90's/early 2000's). I also think he's a bit of a sadist. I watched his Jesus torture porn, and I was just disgusted. I can take violent stuff, but this was clearly just torture porn.

Danny Glover: There's just always been something unpleasant about him.

Tom Cruise: Like Jack Black, there's just this annoying presence to his mannerisms and the way he acts. I can't think of one time that I actually liked a character he played.

Rosie O'Donnell (when she did act): She was big when I was a kid. I never found her funny, just loud, pushy, and obnoxious. She also has this... how do I put it? This presence that implies that she wants to be the focus of the film.

Claire Danes: She always overacts and looks like she's very hard to work with. She looks and behaves like a ticking time bomb. Also, like Tom Crusie, I never liked any of the characters she portrayed.

If you wanna see Tom Cruise really acting, I'd recommend Born on the 4th of July. He's incredible there. Even more than Magnolia, I'd argue. Other than those two roles, I can totally see the meh quality you're talking about. It's like he's always playing to the camera instead of servicing the scene.

In terms of directors, my big turn off is Zack Snyder. He's a guy who should be principle cinematographer but accidentally sat in a director's chair. He lacks the narrative focus to really pull a story together or build character in an engaging way, and instead puts his energy into shot composition. Granted, many visual directors can tell a story brilliantly using the frame, color, and lighting to show ideas and dynamics, but he seems more interested in making an impressive video game cutscene. All the other essential elements are underserved. If you don't give him a masterpiece of a script and force him to follow it, the movie will turn into a lopsided mess.

Agreed on Zack Snyder, I really want him out of the DCEU or at least not in charge of Justice League, the guy's just not cutting it.

Though with Cruise, I do have to say he and Nicholson played well off each other in A Few Good Men. But that was just one scene, I wanted to punch Cruise's character in most of the movie.

I can't stand Will Ferrel. He only has a couple movies I can tolerate him in: his voice acting in Megamind, Elf, and a serious movie called Stranger Than Fiction.  Otherwise he annoys the hell out of me.

I can't stand most of those overused comedian actors from a few years ago that just won't go away? Like I need to look them up because I don't know them by name, but I recognize them...

Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade, Rob Schneider?

Automatic turn off.

Second on Will Ferrell.  I liked him as the voice of Megamind, but to me, everything he does live-action that he thinks is funny just plain isn't to me.  (Full disclosure: Zephyr loved Elf.  I didn't.  XD)

I'd add John Travolta to the list, too.  Seemed okay in Pulp Fiction, but everything else, ihhhhh.

As much as I hate to admit, I believe leaving SNL put Will Ferrel's career on a downward spiral. I like Megamind and Anchorman, but other than that, I have to agree. He was just not funny.

I gotta agree with you, not the biggest Ferrel fan, Megamind and Elf I love, but everything else, meh. I haven't seen Anchorman I'll admit.

I agree about most of Jack Black's movies. Love Kung Fu Panda, Nacho Libre, and School of Rock but I've never been a huge fan from the beginning. He did have a cool band with his bro though.

John Travolta was good in Grease, at least his singing was. So you gotta give him that.

Adam Sandler, I've never liked that guy. Okay, I'll watch his movies and some I'll enjoy but it's rare for me to ever watch his more than once.

And it depends on the movie with Jim Carrey, I like the guy as a person, there's some movies he does absolutely fantastic in. But sometimes I think he tries too hard, I actually like his serious stuff more than his comedies.

I refuse to watch anything directed by Joss Whedon. M. Night is an obvious one.
