What are your least favorite musicals and why
« on: April 01, 2014, 03:51:36 AM »
We all love musical theater and movies but you've got to admit that there are some shows that just rubbed you the wrong way. I judge a musical by story, songs, and presentation.

West Side Story: There's a difference between something old school and something dated. The former means it's a timeless classic that'll survive no matter what the era. Something dated is when it's had a good run and was good for its time but really does not do too well with the passage of time. WSS is the latter. Not just because of the lyrics but the presentation. Can you look at the Jets and the Sharks and see them as legitimate street gangs or hear some of the lyrics and take the show as seriously as it was intended to be at the time? Not me.

Once Upon a Mattress: Not a bad musical, it's a cute story and has entertaining songs but it is the epitome of a school performance. The songs, the story...everything just seems like it can't be performed by anyone other than high/middle school students. My brother performed in it a few days ago as Sir Luce (he's only a freshman so he's can't get a main role yet) and some of these kids were incredibly talented (especially the girl who played Lady Larken, she should sing professionally) but still, I would not pay to see this show performed by a professional theater troupe. Though if I hear "Shy" again, I will kill someone. That was the only song my brother practiced with at home XD.

You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown: See above. They actually had a Broadway revival of this a few years back and I was like "No, just no." Adults cannot perform this musical.

Porgy and Bess: The songs were awful, the story was melodramatic to the point where I was laughing, and a big waste of Norm Lewis from Miss Saigon.

Rocky Horror Show: Other than "Time Warp" and "Sweet Transvestite", there's really nothing to it.

Moulin Rouge: Rehashed songs, a mess of a presentation, and a storyline that left me completely blank as to how I should feel.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella: After Oklahoma!, the King and I, and the Sound of Music, I expected better from Rodgers and Hammerstein. Granted, I only saw the 1990's version with Brandy but it was the songs that turned me off to this one especially "Do I Love you because you're Beautiful?"

All of them. For the simple fact that you have to sing to get exposition across. I'm just not much for musicals. (I hope I Don't come across as a jerk. I just saw the link to this thread and I posted. xD I know this doesn't add much to the conversation.)   Granted, I like certain Disney flicks.

Yes.  And it's a musical.  Involving a lot of anvils.  :D

I also remember not liking Rent when I was 14. I guess the subject matter didn't do it for me at the time. Maybe I'll think differently if I see it as an adult.
