Any vampire/werewolf novels that aren't washed out teen dramas?
« on: November 27, 2013, 05:07:49 AM »
Okay, so for a long time I've been working on my own vampire/werewolf mafia story, Bloodshot Moon. I've been wanting to do some good research like actually reading vampire/werewolf books, but I have a problem. Everything I've come across seems to be another stupid and cliche teen romance drama like Twilight. I really have no business reading those types of books, because my series, although YA does not reflect those types of novels in anyway whatsoever.

I want something cool and good, it doesn't even need to be romance, unless it's an actual well done romance story. So what I'm asking is if you guys ever read any vampire novels that I'd be interested in? Any good ones out there?

Um...I personally haven't read any story/series other than Twilight and its sequals, but I'm sure there must be some good ones out there somewhere, though the idea of "good" is subjective. XD A friend of mine recommended a series to me, but I was stupid and never wrote it down, so now I can't remember, hehe. But if you can't find anything, perhaps you could give those other books a try. You might like some of them. Or, at the very least, you'd know how not to write your novel, based on your preferences. ^^'

Yeah, but one thing I've discovered out about books, is that with the time it takes to get through them, if it sucks it feels like a huge waste of time I could've spent on something else. That's why I'm very particular about books I look for.

I just want something different is what I'm saying. I want something cool, maybe a more action oriented story. Or maybe even something funny.

You could try reading every cliche vampire/werewolf drama and learn what not to do?

Oh but I already have learned what not to do. Twilight covered that. Anything that's been in a teen romance novel has been in Twilight. It's the cliche of all cliches.

I've pretty much given up on all vampire novels. I desperately miss the days when a vampire would tear a person's throat out rather than give them a hickey.

Probably nothing modern to be sure. You'd probably have more luck going classical.

Yeah, I haven't even read any and I can easily pick up on the story just from reading the synopsis. Almost all are the same. I even made a list of all the cliches in teen vampire novels. Most of it was everything I could think of from Twilight, but you could apply a ton to others.

Well then, any classic recommendations then?

Obviously, I would recommend Brom Stoker's Dracula.

It's a little bit different from most novels because it is written in the form of mainly journal entries, letters, ship's logs, ect. But I can promise no cheesy vampire romance. There are some elements of romance among the human characters... but nothing like the 99% thinking about how hot the characters are like you'd find in Twilight.

Dracula. -facepalm- Why didn't I think of that?

Wait. Dracula is written as journal entries and such? That is so cool actually! I didn't even know that. XD

if you don't mind smut in your books (some do), there's the anita blake series. early stuff focuses mainly on crime solving and establishing their bloodsuckers and shifters (there's more than wolves).  once you get so far in though, the smut starts to get a bit more dominant, so once that starts, i'd bail on it.
used to have more, but i've been reading mostly ao3 stuff lately, can't remember the other stuff. that's the only one that i still remember.

cha02 has n0 name, n0 place, n0 gender......cha02 is n0thing and everything - unpredictable

You probably already know this, but in Europe (Romania) there was a man called Vlad the impaler.
He is one of the most famous "vampires" in Europe.

He euh.. well impaled his enemies around his home to fend of his other enemies and he is/ was considered a fold hero in Romania.
It's not a novel, but also not very romantic :p

I have heard of him, but I didn't know all the details. That's actually kinda cool, in a messed up sorta way. Ooh, I could use this info for a villain, thanks!!

No one questions that what Vlad the Impaler did was very cruel. But ask any Romanian and they will tell you that he did what he had to do in the defense of Christianity and his country. He was known to play up the darker parts of his own story, and especially his name, to scare his enemies into not fighting. Very few people would fight against a man who they thought was the devil.

Vlad the Impaler is the origin of the modern idea of vampires.

That's even cooler, reminds me of one of my characters, and even myself a little.

Vampires do stem a bit further back if I remember correctly, kinda. The Empousa of Ancient Greek Mythology were a bit vampire-like.

Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series is one of my favorite supernatural series out there (some of the books are my top favorites!)

Her werewolves are my favorite stories.  She writes werewolves the way I always envisioned them - a human who can turn into a large wolf.  Not an ugly man-wolf.  Bitten is the first in the series and I can't recommend her enough.  Her writing is a smart, witty, humorous narrative that I just...love!

Her writing is a little sexy, but if you're not turned off by a little sexiness (who is?!) than I think you'll really enjoy her work.

P.S. Elena Michaels and Clay Danvers are two of my favorite literary characters ever.  I seriously can't recommend them enough x3
