Episode 214: City of Walls and Secrets
« on: July 10, 2013, 01:34:12 AM »
Okay, I really think Bryke were really thinking about today's China.

1. You can't speak of the war in Ba Sing Se/You can't speak of Tibet in China

2. Creepy overly-smiley brainwashed tour guide/Creepy overly-smiley brainwashed tour guides

3. Laogai is a place where they brainwash people into the Dai Li's way of thinking/Laogai in China is their reeducation through labor prison camps

Yeah, this episode was creepy.

I'm pretty sure tour guides are universally creepy and smiley.

No, they're usually enthusiastic and fast talkers. In the UK, they're snarky sarcastic and dry humored like honest to God English(wo)men. All that's missing were the epic way the Brits insult people.

In China, Joo Dee is exactly like the tour guide we had. Avoided questions, heard only half of what you say, and absolutely loved the word "order". Jesus Christ, we went to the Forbidden City and on the way, we passed Mao Zedong's mausoleum. I asked her where the Party runs things from, she said, "The history of China is very interesting, isn't it?"
