Grand Opening Drabble Game
« on: November 29, 2012, 11:46:03 AM »
We're all brand new here on The Korra Connection whether we've just met, or been on-line or real friends for awhile.

TKC is fresh and new and has that "new car" smell (either that or your mother
board is on fire). Hopefully you're excited to get reacquainted or meet new
people.

We hope that has inspired the writer within you to share your thoughts on everything that's going on or what you see and can do as we venture into a "new horizon".

In honor of the TKC grand opening, we've created a writing game designed for
both new or seasoned writers and essayists.

In 400 words or less, we are asking you to write about your  thoughts on "New Horizons" -  your very own personal thoughts about a new horizon for you, or if you're  ready to write a fan fiction in which your characters experience "a new horizon" in their lives. Try a Korra-themed drabble or something else of your choice!

The sky's the limit here! But one thing is for sure. Whatever you write will be among
the first Drabble stories posted on TKC. Leave your mark on history. :)

In addition to 400 word limit, we ask that you keep the rating of your story to
T or less.

We will take entries until well...until we believe everyone believes we're done! :D

Everyone is invited to share their constructive thoughts about authors' work
here too.

Here's the format for your Drabble submission:

Title: The title of your story
Author: Your username
Rating: pick a rating (K, K+, or T per Fan Fiction.net rating criteria)
Word count: 400 (maximum)
Info/Author's Notes: Explain your story, especially as it relates to the New Horizons theme

Have fun, be creative, and play nice getting acquainted with other writers!  :D

Any questions, please send me a message.

Title: Dancing Horizons
Author: Water Lily
Rating: K
Word Count: 400
Info/Author's Note: Life is filled with mistakes, but that's why it's beautiful. Mistakes mean second chances, and second chances mean the rise to success and achievement. The homesick Avatar seeks comfort among his family and embraces the lesson of new beginnings and redemptions. Sometimes, there may even be little shades of other surprises right around the corner. Takes place after The Southern Air Temple

Dancing Horizons (click to show/hide)“Why did you disappear, Aang?”

Because he was just a kid. A kid. He wasn’t the Avatar. And he never wanted to be…

The stormy eyes of a certain avatar wandered with longing, never breaking the concentration chain as he gazed at the hidden peaks of the Southern Air Temple. The subtle hints of flora and fauna withered away towards a plunge into the envelope of evening. The sky started darkening while the twilight’s heavy burden rested upon the blanketing humidity… despite any reason for Aang’s eyes to continue pondering in such a way.

A melancholy essence sparked within his pupils as Monk Gyatso came to mind yet again. The evanescence of the misty air blinded his ability to separate himself from its firm grasp. It was pulling him in…engulfing him almost… as if it craved to relive the times when there was no such thing as losing a loved one anytime soon. He closed his eyelids, only to greet the visions of his master standing before him and beckoning him with fruit pies. On the other hand, he could still remember the look in his mentor’s smoky hues, questioning him of his disappearance.

Aang graced reality when Sokka’s snores interrupted his musings. He turned to see Momo curled up with the warrior, both still gripping onto the peach while drooling over Sokka’s sleeping bag. Appa soared ahead with majestic pride, one that no other bender would experience besides the descendants of the Air Nomads.

The young monk grinned softly as he tilted his perspective to face the sleeping image of Katara. Within the water tribe beauty’s serenity was a certain happiness according to mere reason. It was something that Aang found so fascinating. Somewhere within his pupils, he could sense a small twinkle glistening at her presence. It wasn’t necessarily her undeniable beauty that seemed to catch his eyes, but the confidence that she was now like family.
As glimpsed one last time towards his old home, he softened his hoarse stare. Every day, the same twilight would be there. But this one was special. This was the first of many more twilights he was to spend with his new family.

“My name is Aang. I’m the Avatar. And I have a family.”

And somewhere within the sky, my friends, the spirit of the young avatar’s mentor uplifted into the element of satisfaction.

Of new beginnings and second chances…

Lilly, that was BEAUTIFUL! Your writing is spectacular and powerful - especially with that word limit. :)

Let's get some more submissions, guys! I know there's other drabble writers out there.

Here's my contribution!

Title: Sunset and Sunrise on the Same Horizon
Author: A6
Rating: K+
Word count: 199
Info/Author's Notes: A new child in a family changes everything, especially the third child when the kids outnumber the parents, but never so much as one who carries the weight of the world on his shoulders for an entire race.

Sunset and Sunrise on the Same Horizon (click to show/hide)The newborn rested comfortably bedside at home in his father’s arms, clearly having little nursing dreams, while his father whispered and smiled, “Hang in there little guy. More for you later. Let your mommy rest!”

He looked across the darkened room at his wife sleeping peacefully for the first time in days, if even for a short time because of this little boy’s voracious appetite.

“The mother of a new race.” He whispered in awe.

Though their other children were also truly loved, all their unspoken desires had finally been fulfilled in this youngest child, rounding out this perfect family.

The last Airbender contemplated the place in history of his youngest child, who proved with his first sneeze he was the Airbender who had been yearned for so quietly.

Conceived in love, born in love, and now to be raised in love by two parents - something that Aang never had the opportunity to experience.

“Little Tenzin, I am still the last Airbender, but you, my son, are the next Airbender.  Something new, something different than any of us.”

And with that they all slept – Aang and Katara, Tenzin and his two siblings.  All part of this renewed-again family.

Title: Stand Behind Him
Author: PSUKFB92
Rating: K
Word count: 253
Info/Author's Notes: Aang has a good new beginning, but what of his new friends? From the POV of the Water Tribe siblings. Katara in bold, Sokka in italics.

Story (click to show/hide)I know how hard it must be for Aang. He's been gone a hundred years and was so excited to finally see his old friends again, but only saw the devastation of the Fire Nation. Just like mine, his family has been ripped apart by the merciless firebenders.

Now he's alone.

Just like I felt when mom died, and then when dad left.

I won't let him go through what I did.

I will stand with Aang the entire way. He's brought me my first bit of real fun in the years since mom's death. He's given me reason to hope that everything will be safe. He's my new friend, and I know he will always be.

I never thought much of Aang. I only thought he was here to wreak havoc and signal the Fire Nation to take down the rest of our tribe, and ruining my students' attention with his silly games.

I didn't know how wrong I was.

Just like Katara and I, he too has suffered a heartbreaking loss - but even worse.

His entire people, gone from the Earth.

Even if our family is fractured, Katara and I still have one.

But he doesn't.

No way you can't help but feel bad for this kid.

Now, we need to stand behind him. We need to help Aang on this ultimate task to master the elements and take down the Fire Nation. He'll be in our family now. Just as I told him, Katara and I won't let anything else bad happen to him.

He needs it more than we do.
ATLA keeps: Kataang hug from The Serpent's Pass, Sokka's DoBS WT armor, Katara's water skins, Appa, Azula's lightning.

LoK keeps: Asami's electric glove, Bolin's seaweed noodles, Korra's hat trick in the pro-bending tournament, Lin Beifong's police uniform, the waterfall behind Tarrlok's desk.

A great effort PSU! Twin thoughts of Katara and Sokka.  Ultimately the same sentiment but from slightly different points of view.

Nice! XD

Title: New Horizons
Author: Glitch
Rating: K
Word Count: 298
Info/Author's Notes: I wanted to do something different than the regular second-person narrative. Instead I went for shape poetry (or I guess it really should be called shape prose) and really fell in love with it. Enjoy her story of redemption~

(click to show/hide)

"Twelve years."
Those horrific words.
That was what I was told,
On that wretched, rainy day of misery.
I had finally been defeated by my arrogant brother,
And reality forced it's way into my life when I was stored in here.

I've been kept in a box of gray nothingness they call 'Solitary Confinement.'
It's supposedly some sort of 'humane' way of containing my 'evil.'
Humane! It is horrific and inescapably pervasive.
The cold metal and the dark atmosphere,
Haunt me even in my sleep.
The darkness scars me.

Knock knock.
Hello, can you hear me?

I'd forgotten the sound of people.
The door creaked open for the first time.
Light burst in, penetrated by the speaker's shadow.
"Your time has come, friend. Come with me, and see the light."

The woman extended a hand to me, and my desperation accepted her offer.
She walked me down the corridors, cold and gray like my cell;
But something was different. There was a tinted light,
That illuminated the hallway around us.
Each step led to more brightness.
Then, we ascended stairs,

And I saw it.
My hair blew in crisp wind,
Chilling the back of my neck as I stared.
Sunlight... The sun was rising far off in the distance.
I had longed to see such a sight for so long that I had forgotten,
What a glorious event it was to witness the rising of the infinite source of heat.

My skin sparked as the light enveloped my entire body in it's warmth.
My eyes squinted as I beheld the glory of the sun.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I stood in awe,
And I realized that this was the beginning,
Of my new life... as I stared at this
New Horizon.

Title: Break
Author: Secrets
Rating: T
Word count: 208
Info/Author's Notes: Trigger warning: blood.
(click to show/hide)Rusty shackles encased her wrists. Darkness swallowed her and taunted her, from all corners, without breaking the void. To suffer would be the long way out. To die would be the easy way out. She fell to her knees, drops of water crashing onto her hand and dripping onto the cold, rocky terrain.

But crying left no way out. It gave release, sweet-tasting and bitter release, but in the end it did no good to this situation in spite of the cleansing it did to the soul. So on her knees she began to crawl, bruised wrists clanking against the chains. Her legs scraped against the ground, leaving a small trail of crimson that trickled out from her punctured flesh. The scars on her arms began to reopen, or at least, they felt as if they were going to.

For as she heaved herself through the dark expanse, she couldn’t stop the barrage of memories that plagued her mind. They were too vivid, too real that she began to relive them. They became too heavy a burden, so heavy that she collapsed from under their pressure. She couldn’t do this. She couldn’t break free. So she cried and cried, her face covered with dirt and tears.

She lifted her head. In the distance she saw light.
