Episode 206: The Blind Bandit

The introduction of Toph, enough said but I also liked the nod to professional wrestling with the whole Earth Rumble thing.

One of my favorite episodes considering it's the introduction to one of my absolute favorite Avatar characters.

Doug is going to love her a lot. Of course almost everyone does so it's a given. But I'm thinking this episode he'll enjoy especially. Jokes are on par, the action is incredible, the plot quite intriguing. Plus the Earthbending is much improved in season 2, meaning they get to go all out with it, truly showing Toph's potential.

This is actually the episode I've been waiting for him to vlog, just to see his insight on Toph.

Earth Rumble was also kind of a nod to MMA/UFC, too.

A pivotal episode in a lot of ways. Toph obviously, but I think there was a sort of stylistic shift starting here that permeated season 2 (and took ATLA from "good kids show" to "classic"). Hard ot put my finger on it, but I know there's something there.

The best part was that they had Mick Foley do his Rock impersonation for The Boulder.

But Toph was a Badass, too. This wasthe first episode I really watched that made me want to see the series from the beginning. Before that I had only seen/heard bits and pieceswhile it was on in the background while I was reading comics.

I remember this episode actually made me start liking earthbending. In season one there wasn't a huge focus on it, so it felt very meh. Seriously the earthbending in Imprisoned is weak in comparison to what we see in season two.

Hmm, so Doug hasn't quite warmed up to Toph yet. I loved her by the end of the episode, but I can understand not everyone feeling that way. He'll like her though, I haven't met much who don't.

This was one of my favorite episodes! I loved Toph, but as Fenix said, I think it'd be hard for the majority of the fandom not to. xD

Seriously, people often say that Zuko is the most popular character, but I think it's just that fangirls are rather vocal about him. Because there are plenty of people that probably don't like him. With Toph I've rarely ever seen anyone not like her, which does make her more popular.

I've never really liked Zuko. But yeah, while Toph isn't my all time favorite, I still really like her.

Zuko and Toph are both awesome in their own right. XD And she's not my all time favorite character either, but she's pretty close!

I like Zuko to an extent as well, but I guess because it's a common thing for people to automatically love him so much, (Even when I was a kid, and at school people would say how awesome he was and I never saw what they were seeing)  my enjoyment of him started to wane. Besides, just that much more room for Katara and Aang.

I dunno. XD I liked him for his story and his struggle to get to where he was at the end of the series. But I've known a couple of people who've simply based their opinions of characters upon their looks, which might be why Zuko fans are more vocal about him, like Fe said....if that's true; I wouldn't know, heehee. ^^'

It's true. I was around the Nick message boards a lot when the show first started and that's where most of the Zuko fangirls originated from. I got front row seats to their craziness. I also witnessed the origin of Zutara, good times. XD

Oh, I liked his story as well, but when I ask people all the time who their favorite character is, and it's Zuko(Not that there is anything wrong with that), or if I meet a crazed fan who says the only good character was Zuko (I've met one), I just kind of get tired of his 'over hyped'-ness

Plus I just identify with characters like Aang and Katara more. But at least almost everyone loves Sokka. Who doesn't love that guy?

I don't. He was easily the worst main character of the series, IMO.

I did say almost. Also, you don't like Sokka?

Nope. His whole role was to be "the funny guy", which would be fine if he was, you know, actually funny. But he wasn't. Like, at all. I can't recall one funny line or joke he had throughout the entire series.

If it weren't for the fact that he saved Toph in the end, he would've been a completely useless character, IMO.

Isn't the lack of comedic effort in spite of his trying the whole point?

I thought he had plenty else going on in both his character and his role in the group dynamic, but if that wasn't already readily apparent I don't think there's much more I can say to convince someone who isn't seeing it.

Don't worry, man. It's cool. I know that opinion isn't going to be a popular one, but it is how I feel.

The funniest thing involving Sokka was in The Chase when Toph says they should just stop running and fight Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee. And then she says something along the lines of it's 3 on 3, to which sokka was like 'I'm here too', and she's just like, "oh yeah. it's 3 on 3 plus sokka."

I think Sokka is a great character regardless of being funny or not. His arc of coming to terms with not only being incapable of protecting the ones he loves but also feeling inadequate in company of supposedly greater people is really relatable. He is definitely not just there for comedy—and, as Spruce mentioned, his being painfully unfunny at times was often a joke in its own right.

As for Zuko, I think he is a brilliantly written character, but I still think he's kind of a jerk. I really can't mesh well with his constant angst and anger and outlashing, but his past speaks volumes of his determination. I don't like him, but I certainly respect him, and if nothing else, he's complex and unique.

Sokka's just jealous 'cause he doesn't have an arrow.
