The Bible
« on: February 11, 2013, 05:18:29 PM »
Whether you believe it to be religiously authoritative, a religious recommendation, or simply a historic book of old, I think there should be a thread for it. I hold to it as my authority on all religion personally and it is of course, because of that, the most dear book to me. I have been very moved this morning by Lamentations 3:22-23.

Quote (selected)
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
 his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
 great is your faithfulness.

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead

it's a nice book with some lovely ideas, but it's misused far too much to justify terrible things.

I have several from this book for what is to me a book of unerring truth written by God through the prophets, but here is one that comes to mind now:

Jeremiah 29:11-13
New International Version (NIV)

11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

I'm not a Christian (I used to be), so I mostly read the scriptures as a historical text and the occasional casual reading since some of the stories I liked.

I enjoyed all of the Gospel, Genesis, Exodus ,Revelations. I don't know why I read through Numbers, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy, but I did. Worst experience ever.

I've also occasionally delved into Paul's writings and Romans I, though I've never gotten very far. I've read other books in the Old Testament though their names evade me at the moment.

Is the story of Noah as portrayed early on in Moby Dick accurate to the Bible version does anyone know? Because I greatly enjoyed that.

I was getting confused with that damn band!

I was wondering. XDD I've never read Moby Dick myself but it's highly possible.

You know, I bet that's where Pinocchio came from, the story of Jonah.
