TAANG <3

I love this ship so much. I know it would never work out, but I still love their dynamic.

I used to ship Taang during The Blind Bandit.  Not during any other episode, but during The Blind Bandit, I shipped them like WHOA.

And then I finally got the joke in Bitter Work (yes, I know, I'm slow) and now the thought of them together romantically makes me physically hurt.

Yeah, that "Air Beats Rock" one is a pretty good example of why I can't see them romantically at all. And the "arrested for annoying" doesn't help either. If actor!Toph from EIP (aka "human Massimo") did that stuff to actor!Aang (a girl playing a boy) and they were implied to be together I have no doubt it would be decried as creepy and abusive.

I friendship Taang.

Precisely.  Aang and Toph have a great friendship, they're like the sibling the other never had.

Once upon a time, I could see them in a romantic light (it was largely DJNS's fault). With the whole magical-vision-in-a-swamp, moonlit-walks-through-the-Bei-Fong-estate stuff... that was some potentially shippy stuff.  But once I realized that they had turned her entire training method into a spirit-breaking metaphor for castration... well, that shut down the shippy feels like that.

Their dynamic works so well as a brother/sister dynamic, much like Zuko and Katara do, but romance between them would frustrate her and psychologically damage him. So... nope. No thank you.

The closest I've come is fearing that Bryke would turn it into a romance triangle between Aang/Toph/Katara when I first watched.

That's extra hilarious because that's almost how the story went.

Except it wasn't gonna be Aang they were fighting over: it was gonna be Katara.  Because Toph was originally gonna be a boy.  And he and Katara were gonna have a flirty thing going on, and it was gonna irritate Aang like whoa.

Luckily, that didn't make it to the final script either!

haha, i beg to differ :D

i find that they can complement each other~
at the start yeah, they do seem to have a rocky relationship, but i think gradually it eventually improves each other as individuals
aang learns how to faces his problems head on and learns to stand up more
toph learns to be more emphatic, learns to trust, etc.

i may be biased, but that's what i think anywayz :P

don't get me wrong tho, i also adore kataang and i'm totally happy with canon~

Yeah, Aang definitely gets better at "thinking like an earthbender" and Toph opens up a lot, but I still don't see them as being romantically compatible. They make awesome friends, and I love their friendship a lot.  But even well into season 3, she's still socking him one for openly showing emotion, making fun of him for being comfortable with his "feminine" side, and just generally degrading a lot of the things that make Aang so wonderfully Aang.  That's fine in a friendship, because that's what friends do (especially friends with such a fraternal relationship as Aang and Toph), but I cannot even describe how toxic that kind of dynamic is in a romantic relationship.  I've seen almost exactly that relationship play out in real life, and it ended with people getting really, really hurt and left emotionally scarred in the aftermath.

I think having them in a romantic relationship would be interesting....but I'd prefer a tragic Taang romance, because I know a relationship wouldn't work out in the long run.

This.  :)

If you want "tragic" and "Taang" in the same story, you can always read...::shudder::...Voldemort.

Hehe, Voldemort is definitely a good read if you want tragic and Taang...  I'm so glad I quit while I was ahead with that one, because at least I don't have to go through the months-long recovery process...

2 MONTHS, Melon.  TWO MONTHS.  Oy, what I would've GIVEN to be able to avoid that.

The worst part was that I did it to myself.  I was like "okay, I'm stopping here.  No, really, I'm stopping."  And then a new chapter would get posted and my loyalty to D would win out and I'd read the damn thing, and then I was like "but I need to know what happens with the kids!"  (Honestly, that is almost the entire reason why I kept reading.  I wanted resolution with the children.  By the end I was skimming over the EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW and just looking for that, but it was too late, the damage was done.  I HAD SEEN TOO MUCH.)

I NEVER expected that fic to hurt as much as it did.  When I first saw it posted I was like "oh, another Taang? Okay, whatever, I'll just read and see if it holds my interest."  Then I saw WHAT the story was going to be about, and I went "...uh oh."  But even then I just said, "okay, but whatever, it's AU, and I'll just stop when it gets uncomfortable, no biggie."  THEN I REALLY wanted to see the spirit world stuff and there was always a reason WHY I felt I needed to continue until it was too late, I was in.

I learned a GOOD LESSON from Voldemort.  Thou Shalt Not Read Fics That Separate My OTP Permanently And Have Either One Of Them Fall For Anyone Else.  EVAH.

But yes, I digress.  If you're a Taanger and you like aangst, Voldemort is for you.  LOL!  We should call them death eaters.  :-D

Sorry to bump this thing up but. I tried looking for that voldemort fanfic but i couldn't find it anywhere. I do like taang but when i rewatched bitter work I remember why i was turned off from it. Toph is so hard on him even if at the end it did help him i just felt so bad for Aang.

It's by DJNS, the Kataang queen, as you're undoubtedly aware. Just go to her ff.net page here. You'll undoubtedly discover quickly which fic we mean.
