What is Mafia?
(click to show/hide)
Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. It's a game that pits an uninformed majority against an informed minority. The players in the game make up what a communal entity known as "Town." In this hypothetical village, the majority are composed of "Townies," and their goal is to eliminate, vote off, or kill members of the "Mafia" (commonly referred to as scum), whose goal is to eliminate anyone else until they're the majority of the Town.

The game is broken into two phases: a Night Phase, and a Day Phase. During the Night Phase, Mafia members are given the opportunity to select people that they want to kill (they cannot kill themselves in most cases). Other townies might have certain roles, such as a cop, or a vigilante, and some times there may even be third party townies who have more ambiguous allegiances to town and mafia. After these roles are carried out, the game moves to Day Phase, where all the townies (mafia included) debate among each other to figure out who the mafia are, and vote (majority rules) to eliminate the most suspicious member of town.

Victory is given to Town if they can eliminate all of the Mafia. On the other hand, Mafia wins when they make up 50% of the town, as that is the point where it becomes impossible to vote off Mafia.

Huh?

Alright, in case you didn't get the roles, to break it down even further, here's a little explanation of some of the most basic roles:

Townie:
You have no real special powers. In some ways, you're kind of like buffer for the town and you're an expendable for the most part when compared to other important roles such as perhaps a Doctor or a Cop (explained below). Still, you have a life, and you have a vote in the town, and that makes you incredibly important. Your say and your vote are the one things that may tilt the game in your favor!

Doctor:
The doctor's self-explanatory. You're blessed with the ability to save someone during the night. If that person was targeted by mafia, or a vigilante, or whatever, then that person will not be killed...at least that night.

Vigilante:
You're an armed crusader of the night. Think Batman or something. You are more than happy to take the law into your own hands, using your trusty gun, and the only bullet you could find. Once per night, via PM,  you may choose (or choose not to) kill someone in the town that you think is mafia. This role wins when town has won, though there are variations like serial killers that are more ambiguous and win in completely other different circumstances.

Detective (Cop):
You're the cop, and arguably the most important role in town, so if you screw up, you may just lose the game for your team. During the day you have just as much power as a normal townie. During the night you can analyze a player, figuring out their alignment, either town or mafia, and the narrator will PM you letting you know if the person you "checked" was mafia or not. You win when all mafia are dead.

Mafia Godfather:
You're the leader of the mafia, and more often than not, the one who issues the final decision on a night kill. The godfather always appears town to detectives, so that is a big advantage to Mafia if they can keep their Godfather alive. Mafia compositions are usually comprised of one goon (no special roles, just adds to mafia numbers), a roleblocker (explained below), and a Godfather.

Roleblocker:

A roleblocker can be town aligned or mafia aligned depending on the game and depending on how the  mod of the game sets up the balance. The job of the roleblocker is to "block" an action that takes place at night. You PM the moderator if you think someone has a role and you want to block. If that person did indeed have a role, they will be notified that they were unable to execute their night action.

I still don't get it...

Well, that's okay, because the best way to play this game is to experience it for yourself. No player just jumps into mafia and becomes instantly an expert, so don't worry if you end up getting voted out in frustration. It happens!

Hmm...for the first game, I guess maybe a small group of at most 15 people. If I can't get that many, 9/10 is fine. We can start small and as people get more interested we can build up the momentum for larger games.

Question: On what ground does one determine a person's suspiciousness? O.o
