Title: What did you think of 'The Last Airbender'?
Post by: LadyKatara on December 02, 2012, 01:38:42 PM
What do you think of this movie?
Personally, I didn't like it, at all, but please state your opinion here as well as vote!

When it comes to this movie, I am a very firm believer of 'Kill it! Kill it with fire!'

This movie is so bad it's not even funny!

^
This, so friggin much. I purchased the DVD since I didn't had a chance(Thank goodness) to watch the movie in the theater. I knew it was bad from stories, but figured I'd at least have a laugh if I considered this movie to be a parody.

It still sucked as a parody. Really, really hard. =/

It's on instant watch on Netflix. And every time I scroll past it I do an internal groan.

You could have been so great movie, you could have been so great.

It was meh.

There was no true sense of feeling between Aang and Katara along with Sokka. I didn't like that you had to be insanely good at firebending to produce it without a fire source too. Oh, and the unnecessary martial arts before any bending was just pointless. My mom liked it, but she didn't watch the show.

mehhhh "/
Title: Re: What did you think of this movie?
Post by: Cassidy Alice on December 02, 2012, 08:33:24 PM
Yeah, some of the martial arts was unnecessary, but I really found it annoying there had to be a source of fire nearby for the firebenders.

The props/scenery/costumes were all beautiful..but no heart in it whatsoever. No character/story/movie editing effort at all. It was sloppy and confusing and just not enjoyable to watch! It really disappointed me seeing this in theaters once. I cant bring myself to watch it again...just..no!

As a fan of avatar, I enjoyed it. But as far as movies go I hated it.

But to quote Snowy's status update, I'd rather see a mediocre adaptation of a child's cartoon than anything Twilight.

Ugh... this waste of money. I couldn't believe a movie could even be this bad.

I could forgive the wooden acting, terrible plot holes, and awful script. Those make hilariously bad movies. But the reduction of bending to nothing more than interpretive dancing really pissed me off.

I still haven't watched it, but I've heard it's terrible. :( Such a shame. A live-action version of Avatar would have been a lot of fun to watch, but from what I can tell, there's nothing good about this movie.

I hated it, hated it, hated it. But at least I enjoyed making fun of it with my brother. Honestly I think I would've disliked it whether I was an Avatar fan or not. It was bad from a fan perspective and a movie goer perspective.

Do not even get me started on this movie. I could go one for weeks about just how this movie gets everything wrong.

And the "Firebending" - Dear God, do not even let me get started on that abomination. I literally fume with anger anytime "Firebending" is used or talked about in that movie.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but... oh, man.  XD

They clearly went to such trouble to have such great costumes, scenery, and props, but to have the story be such an... not an abridgment of the real story, an aberration was beyond me.

Some of it was just darn silly.  The squad of six Earthbenders going through a calisthenics set to move one rock?  Come on!

Had M. Night merely followed where Mike and Bryan had led, he would have produced a masterpiece.  This... is a masterpiece in a different sense.  XD

Yes.  And Katara and Aang going through Waterbending motions together at the North Pole was beautiful.  I do have to say that.

Well I wouldn't call it mediocre I guess. Its too fascinatingly ill-conceived. Like, I don't think this is a soulless Hollywood adaptation. I think he truly cared about telling a good story, and that's why it ended up so baffling in so many ways.

Same here. If the bending was done good and the names pronounced correctly, this would have been a lot better in my opinion, as well as AVATAR STATE WATER SPIRIT MONSTER was in the finale instead of giant wave that doesn't do anything. And if the Kyoshi Warriors were in it.

I could have forgiven the names if the bending had been a bit better and if the Giant Koizilla was there, but sadly it wasn't. And I believe Night said he planned on having the Kyoshi Warriors play a big role in the second movie, but it looks like that may not be happening. ^^'

I've said something along these lines in at least one or two places before, but here goes once more. At the most basic of levels, it was a passable short retelling of Book 1. However, this and the elaborate effort to have the costumes be true to the show are literally the only things that separate this from Dragonball Evolution in terms of how many levels of butchering-the-source-material bad. And even then it falls flat when you look at the details. I could understand if the names were the only problem, as they for the most part (I stress the most part because otherwise I know I'll be getting a reminder about "Agni Ki") were intended to be the same names with a more traditional Eastern pronunciation. However, as you guys mentioned. That wasn't even the half of it.

The most the movie tried to capture the actual magic of the show regarding the dynamic between the characters was, somebody buzz me if I got this wrong, some outtake where Jackson (Sokka) either chased or tackled Nicola (Katara) on the set once and when she asked him what he was doing he said getting into character or something. That's right. In a moment of randomness, this guy got Sokka more than the people behind the movie got any of the main trio.

And the bending…oh, God, the bending. They really handcuffed themselves with the bending. And I don't even mean how standard fare in that department takes Sailor Moon transformation sequence levels of time and complexity to perform. I'm talking about how the minute they said firebending requires a nearby source, they immediately turned the entire premise of the story from "Fire Nation imperial power terrorizes the world for 97 years" (because the real life child actors couldn't stay the same age through the planned trilogy, they made the remaining time three years instead of three seasons), to "Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes are conquered for being ASS-SLOTHFUL BUMS for 97 years."

I went into the movie fully knowing things would be changed, and I was actually excited for that, but the movie was just plain bad IMO. Katara and Sokka becoming supporting characters with zero development is an absolute no. Yue should not be more important than them. Sokka wasn't even funny. The biggest disappointment was how much potential this movie had; it totally failed to live up to it.

It was bad. Yup, this is the only halfway good word i can find for it. It sure is not easy to put the whole season one in this first movie, but they did everything wrong. More or less pretty effects do not make a good movie, even if they think that. There was no good acting, many important things from the show where missing or wrong and even the main character Aang...turned into an emo kid. Yeah, thumbs up for this beautiful change! Not even one actor looked close to the person he or she should represent. Thankfully there will be no more Avatar movies, so these people cannot bring any more shame over this show.

I went in with an open mind and only made it through half the movie. I had no idea what was going on. It was just a huge guessing game. and the Actors were terrible IMO. Katara was emotionless, Sokka wasn't funny, Iroh wasn't Iroh! I think M. Night was trying to make it more serious. But you can't do that with a CARTOON.

In related news, It won a Golden Raspberry for Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3D.

I think you can make a cartoon serious, just not ATLA. Taking away the funny moments eliminates one of the biggest factors that makes ATLA so great-the silly/stupid humor amidst the seriousness.

In the end EIP was really just a huge exaggeration of the characters. It wasn't all that off from the characters canon personalities. It was so bad that it was good. As for the movie, the characters were so far off in personality and looks, you can't even call them the same characters really. EIP was trying to be bad, the movie was not.

EIP is a freaking masterpiece compared to this movie.

EIP is a freaking masterpiece compared to this movie.

I've elaborated on this in the old KF ship war thread in a post which I also copied in the Kataang discussion thread here at TKC, but honestly? EIP WAS a masterpiece BECAUSE it was trying to be bad. Let me explain. The thing about it is in-series it was made for an indoctrinated Fire Nation audience. So the utter goofiness of it all was basically designed to reduce the Fire Nation's enemies and especially the Gaang to wacky caricatures of themselves so that the target audience would be more likely to cheer when Ozai and Azula put them away at the end of the play. And Aang, as the 12-year-old Avatar directly standing in Ozai's way, was the number one target of said flanderization (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Flanderization). Played by a woman as Saxy noted, "Avatar State Yip Yip", his relationship with Katara so cheerfully diminished…the whole thing was played to be cringe-inducing on purpose.

Well, except for Sokka's actor towards the end. He just couldn't resist using the genuine funnies from someone who might as well have been *coughWAScough* the real thing.

The race reversal was so bad even voice actors couldn't get away with being whiter than their characters anymore in this franchise for a bit. See how Korra's VA Janet Varney was treated at first.

In my opinion, the movie was not as terrible as many think. I think that the writing is what made it so hard to watch. Actually, the direction was not too bad, but the writing was so basic and disconnected, that it made the movie a thousand times worse. Also, the different pronunciation of the names annoyed me quite a bit.

I thought it was pretty good as a parody of the original series. Did you see the earthbending dance scene, where the earthbenders were imprisoned in a valley filled with...earth?

I'm in the "writing killed what could have been decent" crowd. Though I've been told it wasn't even M. Night's writing, some Hollywood "script doctor" has the blood on their hands. And is probably out of a job now.

Yeah, but M. Night approved of the script.

Perhaps he did, I'm not familiar with how the film production business works exactly. But what if he was put up to it by the executives bankrolling the operation?
Title: Re: What did you think of this movie?

I doubt it. I don't think executives have the power to do that, and I don't know why they would either.

Get it released on schedule, for what they assess will be a more profitable weekend?

All they have to do is threaten to dock his pay a whole bunch.

This is of course just shooting form the hip with speculation. But, these are very real concerns and methods of "incentivization" for project management.

There's also ample evidence in recent years to suggest that M Night just isn't very good at making films any more.

In an interview on UGO.com, M Night admitted to making the changes personally to make it more culturally correct. It was all based on his personal preference.  http://www.ugo.com/movies/changes-to-the-last-airbender

The script itself definitely showed some of M. Night's personal style. I'm not saying because it was bad or that he's bad or anything, but there were some instances that reminded me of some of his other movies.

Ah, this is also something I can't refute, because I had never seen an M. Night movie before TLA XD. Was giving him the benefit of the doubt, but I'll take yous guys' word for it.

That, and the link to that article.

Really dropped the ball there, M. Night. At least it didn't kill the franchise as a whole.

Haha. Love the results of the poll.

Anyway, this was recently shown on Nick. I dunno why I tortured myself like this, but I watched it (I've seen it twice before the last time). I thought maybe, seeing it again, it won't be as bad...

I was very wrong.

I found myself face-palming so much, my forehead actually started hurting. It's the dialogue. The dialogue's just... not good. I found myself repeating "No." over and over...

unpopular opinion: it wasn't that terribad. Yes, it had its flaws, yes there were things that could be improved. But it wasn't ghastly. It wasn't unwatchable. For trying to cram so much into such a short time, it could be worlds worse. it's ok.

I heard that it was really, really, really (like in epic proportions) bad. Especially the bending arts and the kung fu. (THen again, the limitations on real life.) My friend and I are going to watch it in a week-long movies binge over the summer. :P So I'll get back to you on that.

No. It only took a crew of about 6 earth benders and a dance routine to shift a pebble.

It wasn't the best movie, and it was my first M. Night Shyamalan movie, too. Some things about it were good, but the rest (like the writing) were bad.

Here's the good:

* We finally got a Katara action figure.

* The little Momo plushie from McD's,and Momo's design, while different, was still awesome.

* The CGI Appa (and Momo), and the scenery (such as the Air Temples).

* Aang's tattoos actually had a Buddhist design to them. (It's true!)

* Some of the costumes.

* Some of the details were actually accurate (ex.: Zuko was compared to his mother, Hamma was mentioned).

*Despite the main three characters being white, there was actually a multi-racial cast. I'm not fully supporting the casting though.

The rest......well, you all know how it is.

I sort of a agree with some of those things, but the CGI Appa  an momo were ugly as I'll get out. (Were they even called Appa an Momo in the movie? I don't think they ever mentioned them by name!) I'm not insulting you, I'm just offering my opinion and.....insulting this movie. XD

I actually got round to watching this several weeks ago on a whim cos my friend had it. Its bad. And despite the admirable efforts of the fans its not even entertaining in its badness - if you kept up with fan reactions at all you probably know all the amusing bits already. Its just really really dull, which is strange because it moves so damn fast, mishandling every high point of book one it touches.

The pebble dance is hilarious of course. And I think the movie is best summed up by a scene just after that where Katara narrates a scene in which Aang winds up a ridiculous air blast while a Fire Nation soldier stamps about on the spot twirling his weapons, just waiting to be blown away.

That being said, Dev and Shaun make a decent Zuko and Iroh despite all odds.

I do agree with this.  I liked them, I liked the way they handled their characters, cringed at some of the lines they had to deliver ("Bring me... all your elderly!"  Really?), and I really wish they had more room and material to work with.

I thought that this movie was ok.The movie does have bad things about it such as the weak bending and the Imprisoned scene, though there are some things that I liked about it,like the Blue Spirit scene and some of the weapons the Fire Nation used in the Siege of the North.

There's no risk when it's coming from the Ruler of the world. But you're not the harem master, remember? Castiel is.

Of course, that's the best part. And if you're lucky you'll be invincible enough like Touma or Keitaro so you won't get killed if the girl is super strong.

And if you're extra lucky you'll get a cute tsundere electromaster in your harem instead of one that bites your head and complains constantly that she's hungry despite the fact that she ate five seconds ago.

Sweet.  Will I have a mother who's obsessed with feeing me, too? An I am not a great runner, nor do I have best shoes for it. But I'm okay with that.

That is a cliché. At least in the few anime's I've watched.

Hmm, let me think about that. I've used up most of the best ones. Well if you're going for accidentally running into a love interest while she's in the bath, you could proclaim yourself as an accidental pervert, but beware of getting beaten up a lot unfairly for it.
I'm okay with that. xD I've played plenty of anime base games with scenes where characters(Mostly men xD) get beaten up unfairly because the girls think he's a pervert.

Oh okay then. So how do you feel about having to live with all said harem members? Or going to an all-girls school?

I'm fine with that. Would there be a scene where I sleepwalk into one of their beds? Or vice versa? hahahaha

As long as she's a hot mother. XD You also have to have a relative, maybe a little sister or a cousin, or a second cousin be absolutely infatuated with you. But you can't notice! Oh and don't forget the childhood friend! Can never forget that. Bonus points if she's a tsundere as well.

The mother scenario isn't as cliche, for good reason.

I used to be infatuate with my cousin when I was 5, so I'm good with that. But I don't want a hot mom. xD

There's also the teacher scenario, but I'm not a fan of that, so let's forgo it. It's also not as much of a cliche for obvious reasons.

Q: What did you think of 'The Last Airbender'?

TKC: So little that we're creating a harem series in the thread instead of talking about it.

A/N: I have zero complaints. It's a definitive improvement.

Even if it HADN'T been based on the some 7.6 hours that exists in the first season, it still would have been a scumbucket of a movie. Displayed by probably a majority of the cast: horrible, wooden acting (I know it can be hard to interpret cartoon characters into real-life people, but come on, it's essentially a youth's series! The characters are allowed to have some emotion); I disliked the cast instantly.

Everything from the fact that they attempted to squeeze 20 episodes worth of important information into an average-sized movie, to the ridiculous misprounciations (Bryke wrote the show; the "original Chinese pronounction" is pretty irrelevant) to all the terrible details in between (I don't think any of us can forget the "racebending" scenario XD), this junk movie failed to capture pretty much everything fans love about the series.

And sorry if I do sound so hateful about it- but besides being a total waste of time, I'm also quite shocked when I realize that there are fans of the series who also like the movie, or think it's well-done... I dunno! I just thought it was such a sad attempt of homage to one of the best television shows I've ever been into!

Well, I think it's nice there are fans of the movie...even if I'm not among them. ^^' I'm sure the cast and crew put in some hard work and tried their best. Unfortunately I don't think it worked, but I'm sure some effort was put in, even if it didn't quite pay off. ^^'

It was direction and script that did it, in my opinion. These actors had jack all to work with.

What did I think of this movie? I think this ought to sum it up:

%&*$#@#$*&!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My entire face was stoic throughout the entire thing in the theater because everything about the movie was emotionless. Seriously, this is why Shyamalan should NEVER do his own writing!

Shyamalan*

I keep thinking back to when I first watched this. I was so close to walking out on my first ever movie ever. Looking back on it now, I should have. It would have saved me a lot of pain and suffering.

i loved it when i was in the cinema, watching it lol
but it took me a few months to realize the actuall hate people had towards it

at first i was like; why hate it
the special effects were pretty nice

but then it hit me
THE MILLION FLAWS
the movie had

bad actors, so many things weren't right
and why the hell did they do that for

don't make a movie if you know the result is gonna suck
cause then it obviously will only dissapoint so many people......

The only Thing good about this Movie is that the Review of the Nostalgia Critic and how he praised the original had made me watch the Series in the first Place... but the Movie was still horrible and I'm somehow glad that it doesn't have the Name "Avatar" in it

And second that.  :D  Never thought James Cameron was doing us a favor by demanding the name be reserved for his "Dances with Smurfs--in Space" movie.

Oh, I didn't say I liked his movie, either.  XD  With all that money, you'd think he could buy himself some original ideas.  It's just some comfort to know that his theft made M. Night's... production a little more bearable from that standpoint.
