American public high schools = Day Prison for teenagers
« on: September 10, 2015, 12:11:40 PM »
My brother just entered junior year and since my time in HS, I saw the whole establishment like a state prison. Let's look at how they work. Both are property of the state. Both are overcrowded and underfunded. The inmates'/students' movements in the facilities are restricted by the staff. Prison guards and teachers have a thankless job with a meager salary that barely finishes the month. The wardens/principals have a job that's mainly political and administrative no matter how much they believe in rehabilitating criminals/educating kids. Due to overcrowding, most are prone to violence. The ones ruling the prison yard/school corridors are the ones able to intimidate the right people. Inmates/students generally stick to their own kind. In prison, it's racially segregated gangs, in school it's cliques with generally the same interests. An inmate/student can't leave the facility without authorization. Lastly, while both are noble institutions in theory, in practice, they both lost sight of their mission. Did I mention that both are great for the drug trade?

Thoughts?

Fun Fact: The guy who built my high school originally worked on prisons. Thus we have like no windows or doors in any of the classrooms with the exception of 3. Same with the halls and other rooms. The only windows we have are from the front entrance, the cafeteria, the commons area on the ceiling that's kinda like a huge waffle, a random part of the hall that's pretty much deserted and finally a glass door in I think what they call the science hall.

Going outside after hours of no sun really sucked.

One could even call the lunch hour the hour where the prisoners are let out into the yard. Though I don't think the guards would ever let prisoners go grab a bite at Starbucks.

School Lunch sucks no doubt about that. But I feel like the lunch ladies get bad rep for merely serving what they're given and how to serve it. Lunch Ladies do work really hard each day.
